FAQ About Dental Sealants

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a professionally applied material that is put on the surface of the teeth in order to prevent decay caused by bacteria. Dental sealants are usually placed on the surface of the back teeth (molars) because they are the ones that suffer the most damage. Dental sealants can effectively separate bacteria from the enamel off the back teeth thus preventing the interaction of bacteria with the fissures on the surface of the teeth.
When and Why Should a Child get dental Sealants?
Children as well as teenagers should use dental sealants in order to prevent tooth decay. There are two stages in which dental sealants become crucial in order to prevent tooth decay caused by bacteria which interacts with enamel; at or around age 6 the first set of permanent molars start to erupt, when this happens it is necessary to apply a sealant to prevent caries from damaging the tooth; at age 12 and same process has to be repeated in order to protect the second set of permanent molars which is known to erupt at or around this age.
Who should use dental sealants and are they a replacement for fluoride?
Adults can also benefit from the protection of dental sealants, obviously some adults are more vulnerable to tooth decay than others so a dentist will be old to assess the situation and prescribe the best solution.
Obviously the best candidates for dental sealants are children and teenagers because their oral structure and started to develop but as we just mentioned adults can take advantage of this type of protection to prevent tooth decay and future complications.
Even though dental sealants are a terrific way to prevent caries and damage to permanent teeth they are not a substitute for fluoride. Fluoride contains all the minerals and substances necessary to strengthen your teeth and restore the vitality of your Enamel; sealants are just able to protect the condition of the teeth they are not able to enrich and strengthen them therefore these are not substitute products but complements.

Technological Advances in the Field of Dentistry

To the casual observer it may appear as though is nothing has changed throughout the years in the field of Dentistry however, it is not true. In the past few decades technology has made it possible and more convenient for dentist and for people to achieve better results in half their oral concerns treated in a timely manner.
Because of technological advances in the field of Dentistry it is now possible to perform cosmetic procedures in patients who have lost a tooth or have severe problems concerning the shape and position of their teeth. Let's go ahead and look at some of the technologies that are used today in order to provide a better service to people who are concerned about their oral health and the appearance of their smile.
CAD/CAM technologies:
These stand for computer assisted design and computer assisted manufacture, the use of these technologies have made it possible for dentists to work closely with computer software in order to design and manufacture complex pieces such as porcelain veneers, inlays, bridges and other oral fixtures which were extremely difficult to design and manufacture without the help of computers.
CAT scans:
This has become a standard technology used today by dentists who perform dental implants, by using CAT scans implantologists are able to get a clear picture of the density and condition of the jawbone before they actually thrilled it in order to put in place a special screw which will be used as the base for an implant.
Air abrasion:
This technology is used instead of the traditional and much feared drill in order to perform a cleaning, many patients get extremely anxious and nervous when they see or hear a drill, an air abrasion can provide the same benefits as its older version while preventing the patient from being frightened.
When a patient becomes extremely anxious and the treatment ahead is known to be very painful (root canals and implants) a dentist can't apply a certain degree of sedation which will help the person relax and feel more at ease throughout the entire procedure, some of the substances used are laughing gas and insomnia drugs. There have been a lot more changes to the field of Dentistry because of technology, for more information visit your local library or take some time to chat with your dentist, you might be surprised what you find out.

Jaw-Dropping Advances in the Field of Dentistry

Almost immediately after a person has heard the word "dentist" the first thought that comes to mind is the peculiar environment of the dentist office and the horrible sound of the dentist drill. Luckily for all of us things have changed for the better in the past 10 to 20 years, dentist offices have been built in order to provide a more inviting and comfortable atmosphere and the much feared dental drill is well on its way to be replaced by an instrument which seem at first sight might remind you of a scene from the movie Star Wars.
There is one well-known replacement to the dental drill, this replacement is the machine which uses air in order to penetrate the tooth during operations such as a root canal, this procedure is not referred to as drilling but as air abrasion.
The second option which is currently being developed is be referred to as a plasma needle. As the name implies this is a pen-like device that uses a mixture of helium, air, plasma and electrons in order to create a steady needle which works at a high enough temperature which allows it to penetrate the tooth and cauterize open blood vessels at the same time, the best part of this plasma needle is that it is virtually painless.
The physicist who invented the needle, Eva Stoffels-Adamowicz, suggests that this technology can be used not only in dentistry but during complex surgeries in order to remove cancerous tissue in a way that is virtually painless to the patient. Asian researchers who are interested in this technology have started to experiment with the idea and have also found a way to regulate the temperature and intensity of the needle by releasing a set amount of electrons into the plasma mixture.
Seen at first sight the plasma needle looks exactly like the lightsabers from the movie Star Wars, in a way we can say that reality is finally catching up the fiction by bringing to life the type of technology which will be useful not only the field of dentistry of medicine in general and will also gradually eliminate the fear of the dentist that keeps many people from getting the help they need.

What are Dental Implants and When Are They Used?

Imagine that you are thirty years old and have lost all of your teeth. You could get dentures, but dentures always seem to have that fake look to them. You want something that looks and feels natural; the perfect answer here is dental implants. Most people who lose their teeth, whether it is one tooth or twenty teeth, would prefer not to wear dentures, especially the younger generations, and since dental implants are natural looking and do not fall out they are the perfect solution to maintain the natural look of your teeth.
Dental implants are a type of cosmetic dentistry. Dental implants are an artificial tooth root that is surgically screwed into your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth or broken teeth, but in order to have an implant you have to have enough bone left to be able to screw the implant in. You can have one dental implant or an entire mouthful depending on the situation.
What dental implants can do?
• Without affecting neighboring teeth a dental implant can replace one or more teeth
• Can eliminate the need for a removable partial denture because it can support a bridge
• Can make dentures more secure and comfortable because it can provide support
Types of implants:
• Endosteal: This type of implant is in the bone and is the most common type of implant used. Screws, cylinders or blades are surgically placed into the bone to hold the replacement tooth.
• Subperiosteal. This type of implant is placed on top of the jaw bone with the metal framework’s posts coming out of the gums to hold the replacement tooth. These implants are not as common and are used on patients who can not wear conventional dentures or who have minimal bone height.
The procedure to receive dental implants is a multiple step process. The first part of the process is to place metal anchors into the jaw bone and to allow the bone to fuse to the anchor. The next step is to place an extension in the anchor. The third and final step of the process is to attach a prosthetic tooth, also known as a crown, on the extension.
Despite the steps involved many people use dental implants because they find that implants look more natural than dentures or bridges. People also prefer dental implants because they are a more stable solution than dentures or bridges which can become loose over time or slip out of place while talking or chewing. Implants are screwed into your bone which allows them to act just like normal teeth. They can wear out after a period of years, but tend to last longer than dentures or bridges.
The dental implant procedure is like any other dental surgery, except you are going to have more than one period of recovery. The first part of the procedure is to expose the jaw bone so that the implants can be placed. Once the implant is placed the dentist will put in a cover screw and the area is closed with stitches. Placements in the lower jaw can need about three months to heal, while placements in the upper jaw need about six months to heal. The second part of the procedure is uncovering the implant, removing the cover screw and place a temporary crown into the implant. This allows the tissue around the implant to be trained to grow around the final tooth. The healing process from this surgery takes about two months.

Popular Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures For a Beautiful Smile

Popular Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures For a Beautiful Smile

Cosmetic dentistry can radically change how you feel about your smile. Popular cosmetic dentistry procedures include dental implants, veneers, crowns, bridgework, reconstructive and Zoom 2 whitening.
Dental Implants
If you have missing teeth that you wish to correct through cosmetic dentistry you will be interested in dental implants. Implants are surgically screwed into your jaw bone to appear as a natural tooth (or teeth). Many dental practices utilise treatment planning and surgical implementation software systems to help guide the successful placement of implants into your mouth. Your dentist will first have to ensure that you have enough bone in the space of the missing teeth before successfully being able to proceed. If you find that you do not have enough bone space there are other corrective options to consider such as bridges or dentures.
Veneers, Crown & Bridge
You can replace a missing tooth / teeth with bridgework. Bridgework involves placing a false tooth between two porcelain crowns, which can be an alternative to implants. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out, so it is very important that you treat your oral hygiene seriously. A few benefits to having bridgework, aside from a beautiful smile, include bite issue correction and even improved speech.
Crowns will give you a cosmetically stunning smile. Crowns are ceramic metal or metal and ceramic structures which cement over the top of malformed, fractured or heavily filled teeth to give great strength and appearance for the long term.
Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain facings that adhere to the outer facings of your teeth similar to the concept of false fingernails. Veneers are a fantastic option for closing gaps and disguising discoloured teeth which is commonly caused from medications, coffee, tea and / or cigarettes.
Reconstructive
When teeth are compromised by decay, broken fillings, and general wear & tear a comprehensive treatment plan that will address the health and appearance of your teeth and gums, is necessary. Crowns, bridges, veneers and implants all help to restore your teeth to their best condition resulting in a new beautiful smile.
Zoom 2 Whitening
Whitening or tooth bleaching is a very common dental procedure that will beautifully enhance your smile by correcting discoloured teeth. Zoom2 is a sophisticated, non-invasive clinical technique that uses intense light to bleach teeth back to their whitest. It's a safe and long lasting procedure.
Whether you have a chipped tooth, missing teeth and / or discolouration problems, there is a cosmetic dentistry procedure available to correct the problem and which will provide you with safe and long term results.

The Dental Implant Process

Consultation: To begin the dental implant process, you will receive a consultation from an implant specialist. Your general dentist may not be the person to perform this consultation. Be sure to ask whether or not they have experience in this process. There are some dentists that perform the entire procedure including surgery. While it may seem easier to go to a "one-stop-shop" dentist who does it all him or herself but this is not advisable unless you have thoroughly vetted their professional experience with not only dentistry but also the oral surgery component necessary to perform a successful implant.
Preparation of the Implant Site - Tooth Extraction and Bone Grafting: The ultimate success of a dental implant depends in large part on the health of the patient and their jawbone prior to placement of the dental implant posts. A sufficient amount of healthy bone is needed for the implant post to fully integrate into the jawbone. Some patients, specifically those who have been missing teeth for many years, may not have enough healthy bone to support an implant. In such cases an experienced professional can perform a bone grafting procedure to build up the bone at the implant site. During this procedure, he will take healthy bone from another part of the body and place it into the jawbone. If taking bone from another part of the body is not an option, some other options include using cadaver bone or bovine bone. Dependent upon your particular case, it may also be necessary to extract an existing non-performing, rotted or otherwise compromised tooth or teeth to make room for the implants.
Placement of Dental Implants and the Replacement Teeth: Once prepared, an incision in the gum will be made and the implant will be surgically implanted into the jawbone. The oral surgery is usually a quick and relatively painless procedure. It is done under a local anesthetic. It will usually take several months for the jawbone and gum to fully heal while your living bone fuses with the implant, a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, you will return to your general or cosmetic dentist to have a natural-looking replacement tooth affixed on the implant post.
After the entire dental implant procedure is completed you should be the beneficiary of a permanent tooth or teeth. The longevity of the implant prosthetic will vary dependent upon many factors, including age, general health, oral health and how you care for your teeth.

Augmentation And Superior Dental Insurance Is Of Great Help

The cost of quality dentistry, especially cosmetic dentistry is best considered as an investment in your health. When you have experienced physical trauma and need to have teeth replaced, keep in mind that the cost of dental implants is based on their prominent function. Teeth play a role in your ability to speak clearly, prepare your food for digestion by your body and support your facial features.
Your mouth is the gateway to your body and oral hygiene or the lack of it can be a contributing factor to the support or the deterioration of your health as a whole. Many dentists have flexible plans to accommodate credit cards, insurance and cash payments. But beyond financing the procedure, the most important thing is for you to discuss with your dentist whether cosmetic dentures or dental implants are the best choice for you.
Returns Guaranteed With Dental Insurance:
Some of advantages of dental insurance is it is provided by the employer hence employees do not have to worry about how to go about applying for it and qualifying for it etc. Dental insurance usually covers the cost of preventive treatments like cleanings and exams at 100% after the initial deductibles are met. Also, you can go to any dentist you like and not be restricted by the closed panel of dentists that some dental plans insists on.
Beneficial Texture Of Dental Insurance:
Of course knowing that the dentist is paid a set amount per plan member, regardless of how much dental treatment is provided, and should bring some questions to your mind. One of them is, will the dentist provide the treatment that is in your best interest. It is certainly possible that the amount of dental treatment that an enrolled individual requires will exceed the amount the dental insurance company will ever pay the dentist to provide this treatment. In this instance the more dental treatment the dentist performs the more money they will lose.

Levels of Sedation For Fearful Patients Sedation Dentistry

If you are a person who would rather endure toothache and pain instead of going to the dentist to receive proper treatment then you need to know that you're not alone. Many people are so phobic about going to the dentist that they prefer not to have any treatment all, the same can be said of people whose body gets completely tense after just having a thought of going to the dentist to have a teeth cleaning performed.
In order to address this issue in a field of sedation dentistry has been greatly improved and dentist are now able to offer different levels of sedation according to the patient's fear intensity, the following are the levels of sedation which allow dentists to work with highly nervous patients had successfully perform root canals, wisdom tooth extraction and such.
-- Minimal sedation
This is a little observation which is applied to people who are not completely afraid of a dental procedure but they would prefer to be mildly sedated in order to help them relax throughout the treatment.
-- Moderate or conscious sedation
This is a slightly stronger type of sedation which allows patients to remain awake and somewhat drowsy while the dentist is doing a dental operation. Most people will partially remember the experience due to the intensity of the sedation.
-- Deep sedation
This treatment is applied to people who are very nervous and uncomfortable with dental procedures, while they are still conscious to a certain level, they may not remember the experience. Even though this is a stronger level of sedation the patient can still be awakened.
-- General anesthesia
This one is often applied to people who are going to have a serious or intrusive intervention performed such as a root canal, wisdom tooth extraction and such. This type of sedation successfully eliminates the chances of extremely nervous patients from being conscious during such procedures and since they are not conscious of what is going on they will have no memory of the operation.
Some of the methods that are used to sedate patients and create a more comfortable environment for them are: inhaled minimal sedation which often involves laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral sedation were the patient needs to take pills such as Halcion, moderate sedation were the patient receives a sedative through a vein and finally deep sedation which requires general anesthesia or drugs that will make the patient completely unconscious until the effects have worn off or are reversed through medication.

Dental Health and Healthy Babies

General hygienists know the value of good oral health which is why they encourage women to visit the dentist before they become pregnant. Likewise, it is highly recommended to encourage and keep good oral health in women who are thinking about having a baby. Dental problems are common during pregnancy and it has been estimated that over 75% of all women suffer from gingivitis and/or gum infections, the worst part about this type of diseases is that they are virtually painless so a pregnant woman may not be fully aware about the fact that their dental condition may be hurting their baby.
Complementary studies have shown that women with gum disease have a higher incidence of preterm low weight babies, obviously the better shape your mouth is thin before a woman becomes pregnant and less chances she will have a having a severe gingivitis which may affect the overall health of the baby.
Today's dentists are trained to look at the big picture as the mouth can show telltale signs of eating disorders, bone problems, diabetes and cancer, plus some research have linked gum disease to stroke, heart disease, pneumonia and more. There are so many links that have recently been discovered that it is imperative for the dentist considered not only oral health at one's overall health.
While a visit to the dentist is no substitute for a general checkup many diseases and conditions can be discovered and treated at an early stage because of the results shown after an oral exam. The mouth is said to be a mirror image of what it's really going on with the rest of the body so keeping a healthy mouth goes hand-in-hand with a healthy body and also with the ability of women to give birth to healthy babies.
Previous studies have shown that bacteria which is found in a person's mouth is able to interact with other organs after being transported by the bloodstream which is why constant bleating of the mouth should be treated at an early stage in order to prevent heart conditions, stroke and the many other diseases we have previously mentioned. Taken in consideration of this last statement will create a better understanding of the reason why having good oral health will dramatically increase the chances of women to deliver healthy babies.

Orthodontic Treatments Successfully Treating Malocclusion

Successfully Treating Malocclusion - Orthodontic Treatments

In order to treat bite related problems orthodontists use appliances, the removal or ultimately surgery to fix the way to teeth or the jaw is aligned. The appliances that are used during an orthodontic treatment may be functional or fixed, before using one or the other an orthodontist will perform an evaluation which will help them determine which treatment is best to correct a specific malocclusion problem. Today we're going to describe the characteristics of the appliances that use in order to successfully treat malocclusion.
-- Functional appliances
This type of orthodontic tools relies on the forces that are produced by the muscles which help us speak, eat or swallow. By redirecting these forces functional appliances are able to realign the jaw and teeth which have to be repositioned; some of these appliances are removable, others are fixed or bonded to the teeth and others may span across the mouth to leverage the position of the molars to realign the jaw.
-- Fixed appliances
As the name implies these are a set of wires or brackets are directly attached to the teeth in order to correct their position, the most common form of a fixed appliance is referred to as dental braces. These tools work over a set period of time in which he appliance needs to be readjusted to balance of forces that will correct the position of misaligned teeth, this process is also referred to as bone remodeling.
Another good example of the type of orthodontic appliances which are used to prevent teeth from moving back out of their position is called the retainer. The difference between braces and retainers is that braces are used in order to correct and realign the position of the oral structure; retainers on the other hand are used to keep the teeth on the same position after the braces have been removed, dental retainers can be removed and are not as noticeable as braces, they can also be placed on the back of the teeth to make it nearly impossible for someone to tell that you're wearing retainers.
Recent orthodontic tools have been developed in order to get the best from braces and retainers, one of the appliances is referred to as Invisalign, these are virtually invisible braces that can be used to realign teeth without going through the social discomfort that traditional braces may provide, especially in adults.

Causes and Symptoms of Bruxism?

What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Bruxism?

Bruxism is a term used to describe the constant grinding or clenching of the teeth. This is a very common condition amongst children and adults, in the US it has been estimated that about 50% of all the adults have or have had the tendency of grinding their teeth, out of that percentage about 20% grind your teeth in a constructive way, meaning that the Enamel which is the outermost layer of the teeth gets compromised by the constant friction and pressure.
The describe some of the symptoms that can be used in order to determine whether or not you suffer from this condition.
Symptoms:
-- Increased tooth sensitivity is known to be one of the symptoms that constant grinding cause
-- Because of the constant friction some people report to have chewed tissue on the inside of their cheeks; this tissue trauma may lead to oral infections.
-- Irritating sound. Married adults have reported that their partners constant clenching of the teeth has gotten so loud that it disrupts their night sleep.
-- Earache may also be a symptom due to the constant jaw muscle contraction; this pain doesn't necessarily indicate that there is something wrong inside the ear of a person who suffers from this condition.
-- Worn tooth enamel, this is actually one of the most common symptoms caused by tooth grinding amongst the 20% of people who grind their teeth so hard that they change the shape and condition of their oral structure.
Possible Causes of Bruxism in adults:
-- People who have an aggressive or hyperactive personality may be vulnerable to bruxism.
-- High levels of anxiety, tension or stress can also lead to this condition.
-- Anger and/or frustration
Possible causes of bruxism and children:
When it comes to children this condition is mainly attributed to the growth of their oral structure and jawbone, some researchers have observed that some of the children who grind their teeth to it because their top and bottom teeth don't actually fit comfortably as they are coming out, in other cases they do so because of they may be teething or feel anxiety or anger.
Even though only 20% of the people who grind their teeth do it in a constructive way it is always recommended that you pay a visit to the dentist as often as possible if you suspect you may suffer from this condition. Simple But Effective Ways to Fight Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis is a condition that affects more people than you can possibly imagine, the reason it is so common amongst people of all ages is because there are many causes that contribute to trigger this condition such as bad habits (related), a side effect of certain drugs and medications, regular consumption of certain foods and drinks and such.
Today we're going to present some of the best (and easiest) solutions in order to control an effectively reduce the effects of halitosis.
Flossing
When it comes to flossing more and more people seem to have the wrong concept in regards to the routine that needs to be kept in order to prevent gum diseases and bad breath. Right after a meal a person should first floss his or her teeth in order to remove food particles that may be trapped between them, once these food particles have been removed from between our teeth and we can proceed to brush them. Food particles that remain after we brush our teeth are one of the causes for bad breath.
Brushing your Teeth AND Tongue
Many people think that by just brushing our teeth were able to reduce or eliminate bad breath but the fact of the matter is that our tongue contains a huge amount of bacteria which can't be compared to the amount of bacteria that surrounds the teeth. Brushing your tongue can effectively reduce the amount of bacteria that causes bad breath.
Using Mouthwash
Mouthwash is a very effective tool in the fight against halitosis, the chemical mixture found in mouthwash liquids is able to kill a high percentage of bacteria that triggers bad breath.
Quit Bad Habits
It goes without saying that it is absolutely pointless to complain about having bad breath if you intend to continue smoking. One of the most essential steps towards him bad breath treatment is to eliminate your dependency on products that hurt your oral health.
In addition, make sure to visit your dentist as often as possible in order to treat any gum disease you may have. Untreated periodontal diseases can seriously hurt your gums and even your jawbone, we are not exaggerating the situation since everything in our body is linked together and no disease is completely isolated to one region.

The Awkwardness of Adult Braces

Feeling and looking young is an unspoken goal that is part of everyone's new year resolution, while it is a positive attitude towards life it takes a lot more than just the hope of looking good, it takes work. One of the known procedures which can positively enhance the way a person's face looks is a smile makeover which is a term used to describe several cosmetic dentistry procedures which are performed on the person in order to realign, reshape and brighten a person's smile.
Yes, cosmetic dentistry procedures can be life changing but if you're teeth need realignment because of changes created by the wisdom teeth or by any other condition that you have suffered throughout your life then you will need to have an orthodontic adjustment, in order to readjust your teeth and put them in the position where they will be visually appealing while providing a good occlusion there will be a need to apply constant pressure, the most popular devices that do just that are known as braces.
The most common types of braces are made of metal, you might remember them because many children and teenagers used to look very awkward with them, metal braces are also considered to be a sign of youth because they are mostly used during a person's early years in order to correct and prevent misaligned teeth. While many people do want to look young this is not exactly what they have in mind so when a dentist recommends braces the most common concern is how awkward the patient will look, especially if he or she is a business person who has to socialize with a lot of people on a daily basis.
Luckily braces had been redesigned in order to be more convenient for the user and the nearly invisible to those around. Invisible braces can be a big plus for business people who need to look their best at all times but need to wear braces in order to improve their smile. Regardless of how they look invisible braces can provide the same benefits that metal ones do and can be even more convenient as a person can remove them while eating or cleaning their teeth and after those tasks are done they can be put back in place to get the benefits of dental realignment.

Smoking More Than Just a Simple Lung Problem

A person was not born to live alone and completely isolated from society however, certain attitudes and addictions can surely create this illusion as many people will try to avoid dealing with someone who is a heavy smoker, the reasons are plenty and obvious. It is normal for someone to try to look his or her best, smokers fall within this category as well but their addiction can prevent them from achieving this goal and can complicate the smallest problems.
Smoke and is normally associated lung problems but it also has a very strong impact when it comes to oral health, this destructive habit and stain teeth and create conditions that are very painful to withstand. Some of the oral consequences that smoking brings about are:
-- Bad breath
-- The loss of taste and even smell
-- Consistent build up of plaque
-- Stain teeth
-- Severe gum bleeding
Whenever a smoker tries to get a dental treatment done, the dentist will heavily recommend the patient to quit this destructive habit because it has a negative effect throughout the healing process of a dental operation (such as the healing process that implement require during the osseointegration phase) and because they tend to worsen small infections.
Sadly enough the habit of smoking is the leading cause related to tooth loss, once a tooth is missing the obvious procedure recommended by dentists would be to put in place implants which will be anchored by the jawbone, this procedure can not be successful if the person is addicted and actively smoking throughout the recovery phase. Telling a person to quit smoking is obviously a lot easier said than done because of the physical and emotional dependency that the smoker has developed to nicotine which is a very strong narcotic that creates dependency just like many other drugs.
The process of quitting this habit can be very challenging because a person may suffer from cold sweats, irritability, tremors, anxiety and even depression. As bad as it may sound the benefits of getting rid of this habit are many and a person can positively recover from the destructive effects of cigarettes which will obviously make a dentist's work a lot easier and will also allow for faster recovery times.

Pop-Culture and Braces

Braces and Pop-Culture

A symbol of youth, that's how braces are regarded in most parts of the world however, the meaning that they are given in other countries it's actually surprising. The most common type of braces are those made of metal, their orthodontic purpose is to apply pressure towards a specific direction to a set of teeth in order to reposition them in a way that is visually pleasing after the treatment is complete.
Braces are normally seen in children and teenagers because throughout their early years orthodontic complications can be prevented by the use of these devices, in the United States alone 30% of the people who wear braces are actually adults, this means that the orthodontic benefits can still be received even if braces were neglected throughout infant years.
As time went by technology has changed everything so yesterday braces are no longer the best because clear and invisible ones have been developed in order to be less awkward and provide better results as they are aided and designed to high-tech computer imaging which is mostly based on CAT software data.
The way that braces are regarded in third world countries can be amusing to some people, while they are generally seen as a symbol of youth and inexperience, in these countries they are seen as a symbol of wealth so next to obesity having braces is actually a good thing. In Thailand (2006) the media reported that authorities started to punish people who sold fake braces for youngsters who consider them to be part of a fashion statement, the fines were as high as $1300.
In proxy countries such as the Philippines the same fashion trend has been experienced mostly due to the fact that people in this country consider braces to be an indicator of wealth so not only do youngsters were caught wearing these fake braces but adults and even elderly people were caught doing the very same thing.
The truth of the matter is that for some people braces are expensive and often require a long commitment (which is a case of third world countries) but in more developed ones they are still used because of their orthodontic benefit.

Best Procedure to Replace a Single Missing Tooth?

Best Procedure to Replace a Single Missing Tooth?

The three most common options in replacing a missing tooth are removable dentures, bridges and dental implants. Removable dentures are traditionally comprised of a replacement tooth or teeth which are attached to a pink colored plastic base which serves as the gum. A metal framework is then attached to the teeth-gum set-up. The dentures are connected to the natural teeth surrounding it by metal clasps to keep it in place. To get used of this method may take some weeks until the uneasiness is gone. Dentures alter the environment inside the mouth which builds up plaque deposits.
A bridge is another common way of replacing a missing tooth. In this process, the teeth which will be supporting the bridges are cut down which is a major disadvantage of this method. It is also not easy to clean the parts of the teeth under the bridge which may result to decay.
A dental implant is a replacement of synthetic root tooth. This method is considered to be the best treatment of choice in filling in a missing tooth. The most common practice which uses titanium to bind into the jawbone was discovered by Per-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish Professor. The titanium screws placed into the jawbone ensure the permanent placement of the new tooth.
Tooth implant is under the cosmetic dentistry category. Implants are proven to be more durable than dentures and bridges. It is valued as the best and a permanent answer to tooth loss. It reestablishes all important functions of a real tooth like chewing, biting and grinding food. Dental implants look and feel real and are permanent as they are fixed with the jawbone. While dentures do not make it easier for a person to speak, it is never a case when it comes to implants. One can talk and communicate confidently with people without any trouble of thinking that it might slip off your mouth.
As it functions like a natural tooth, one can expect comfort having it. Implants give you the chance to smile again with great self-esteem knowing that people will not even know your tooth is just implanted. Bridges and dentures result to plaque and tooth decay later on while dental implants improve oral health. Implants do not require cutting off other teeth and will not disturb other teeth next to it thus promoting oral hygiene.
Dental implants undergo two procedures. First if the preparation of the jaw where the new tooth will be fused. This is when a little hole is drilled in a specific part of the jawbone. This hole will lead the titanium screw in place. Second stage is the placement of the implant. In this specific stage, the little hole will be broadened to admit the insertion of the screw. Another screw will then be put above it as protection cover giving the dental implant the chance to heal. After some months, the cover is taken off and is replaced with an impermanent crown which will then be replaced by a permanent crown after in the right time. It does take time to finish the whole treatment but it is surely worth it.
Anyone who is healthy enough to undergo dental implant surgery can avail of this method. Patients should also have healthy gums, strong jawbone and enough bone to support the implant. To achieve best results, the patient is also expected to comply with the dentist's directions and should see their doctor during the routine check-ups.

Why Should You Go For Dental Implants?

For "dental cripples" who are bothered by missing teeth, dentures or bridges may sound like a favorable option. However, these devices don't look or feel like natural teeth and they can irritate the gums.
Healthy adjacent teeth also have to be destroyed to accommodate these restorative devices. What's more, loose or ill-fitting dentures may fall while you're talking or laughing, leading to embarrassing situations. They also have to be adjusted periodically since dentures won't prevent the jawbone from shrinking which normally happens when you lose teeth.
"Patients with dentures lose a great deal of chewing efficiency and a considerable amount of taste sensation. Full dentures need to be repaired and periodically checked for wear and tear. The plastic denture doesn't change, but as time goes by the tissues under the denture do change, and this leads to loosening of the dentures, sore spots, and potentially dangerous chronic irritations that may be a factor in oral cancer. The gums and jawbones, even without teeth, can develop cysts, tumors, and infections," said Drs. Marvin J. Schissel and John E. Dodes in "The Whole Tooth."
"Perhaps the most common cause of denture problems is unrealistic patient expectations. Patients should be taught exactly what to expect from a completed denture. They should be cautioned that the denture is not bolted into place but merely rests on the tissues; certain movements of the mouth will dislodge it," they added.
Fortunately, there's a better way to restore missing teeth: dental implants. Since they were developed over 50 years ago by Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark, dental implants have helped close to million toothless people worldwide.
Unlike dentures that can last for only a few months or years, dental implants are made of titanium and last a lifetime. They are surgically implanted into the jawbone and left there for about six months for osseointegration to take place. This is the process wherein the implants fuse or attach to the bone. An abutment or small metal post is later attached to each implant serving as the foundation for new replacement teeth.
While the technology is new, dental implants were used thousands of years ago by the ancient Egyptians. Now they are extensively used in the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, and other countries. In the western world, over 2 million dental implants were performed in 2003. The worldwide market for dental implants is expected to reach $3.5 billion in 2010, making it the fastest growing segment of the global dental market.
"With oral health improving and people living longer, the number of teeth to be maintained is increasing at a rate faster than the population is growing. Increasing retention of teeth has created new needs and greater demand (for implants). As adults retain more teeth, they experience a greater severity of periodontal involvement which is the leading cause of tooth loss," revealed Anne Anscomb, author of the study "Implant-Based Dental Reconstruction: The Worldwide Implant and Bone Graft Market."

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional tooth replacement procedures. Gone are the days when patients were forced to simply wear unsightly or uncomfortable caps, crowns or dentures. Often insecure and artificial looking, these solutions left people unable to talk and eat with confidence. Dental implants minimize the risks associated with crowns and caps, while maximizing the rewards by producing natural looking, healthy and most of all safer teeth that let recipients smile with conviction.
Dental implants are essentially artificial teeth that that are placed within the jaw. Although they are typically more aesthetically pleasing that the alternatives like crowns or dentures, the real reason many people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing teeth boils down to safety. Implants are a safer, more tooth-friendly procedure that has little to no adverse effect on neighboring teeth or gums.
When a patient elects to insert a bridge in support of missing or decayed teeth, adjacent teeth are usually altered to support the procedure. Over time this leads to gum and dental erosion. With implants, the replacement tooth looks virtually identical to the real thing, and the patient suffers nothing in terms of later tooth decay.
Today there are two dental implant procedures that most periodontists employ:
Endosteal is the most common procedure. Here, various types of screws, cylinders or blades are selected for insertion directly into the jawbone, with each implant holding one or more prosthetic teeth.
Subperiosteal is a less common alternative that is used for patients who are unable to wear dentures and have minimal bone height. The implants are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework inserted into gums.
Dental implants typically have a very high success rate, but typically require a patient that is in good overall health. Since we are dealing with invasive surgery, candidates who experience advanced gum disease or weak jaw bones may not be approved for the procedure. But for those that do qualify, they can expect a healthy, natural-looking smile that will, provided they continue with proper dental hygiene, last for years to come.
Locations offering dental implant surgery are located all across the country, particularly in the Northeast (New York, New Jersey and Boston), Nevada (Las Vegas and Summerlin), Los Angeles as well as various locations in Canada.
Dental Implants Info provides comprehensive information on the procedure and cost of standard and mini dental implants, and focuses on the Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York regions. Dental Implants Info is the sister site of Rhinoplasty Web.

3i Dental Implant

The 3i Dental Implant is a product of Biomet 3i. The 3i implant is a tapered implant that has been designed to provide primary stability and also help the dental surgeon in placing it in the jaw accurately.
The 3i dental implant has accurate, uniform thread design right up to the apex of the implant and this allows a close and intimate fit into the bone of the jaw. Also, this design allows for the complete contact between bone and tapered implant for its full length helping to give greater stability to the implant. The tapered design gives the 3i tooth implant the look and feel of an actual tooth.
The Biomet 3i dental implants helps dental surgeons to go for immediate or same day implants. This cuts out the long waiting periods when patients have to wait for months for the tooth implant to heal before abutments and crowns can be loaded on to the 3i tooth implant.
The new design allows for the 3i biomet dental implants to be placed immediately after bone grafts. It allows for simultaneous grafts and implant placement. The 3i teeth implants can be placed immediately after tooth extraction. The advantages of this new design system are that patients no longer have to go around with gaps in their mouth, they don't need to wait for long to get new teeth, this cuts down on the bone and gum receding and subsequent problems related to that.
The 3i implant shape and design promotes head start for bone integration, its domed shape apex prevents any potential damage to nerves or surrounding tissue, tapered design helps it to be placed even when the site location is having roots of adjacent tooth and the thread angles promote better anchoring with the bone which helps in primary stability and accurate placement of the tooth. Thus, making the 3i dental implant a good choice for both dental surgeons and patients for the long term success.

Types of Dental Implants Used by Dentists to Fix Smiles

Dentists use dental implants to replace missing teeth to give you a complete smile. Outwardly, the three types available look all the same and may even be made from different materials, including plate form, subperiosteal, and root form. Each one is designed differently to ensure you get a long lasting replacement that keeps you looking your best. In order to tell which one you will need, the dental professional will need to match your bone structure to the correct style.
Plate Form Dental Implants
When your jawbone is too narrow, a plate form is the most effective method to use. The metal portion that sits beneath the gum line is long and flat. This allows the new tooth to sit along beside the jaw line. To install this, dentists cut down and expose an area of the jawbone after administering anesthetic. The implant sits into place and the gums are carefully secured into place. Some are attached to restore your smile instantly while other requires some time to heal in order for the metal to fuse onto the bone. The amount of space opened up will depend on how extensive the work is.
Subperiosteal Methods
When there is very little bone to hold the material, a specially made subperiosteal style form is the best choice. In all, there are two different ways dentist can install this style. A single surgery method requires a CAT scan and a special computer program to process the corresponding data to create a 3D model of your jawbone. Then, dental surgery is performed to expose the jawbone and lay in the plates.
With a dual surgery procedure, the gums are opened up and a special impression is made of the remaining bone. The form is then sent to a lab to form the plate. In the second surgery, the bone is exposed and the plate is laid into place.
Root Form Styles
These are shaped similar to your original teeth with a tooth like shape on the top and a screw like form that attaches it to the bone. These are best for good bone structures that are wide and deep. Dentists will open the jawbone, set the rod into place, and close the gums. It will then require three to six months of healing for the bone to grow around the metal. Otherwise, the pressure placed on your tooth through normal activities will cause the post to dislodge. Once it is completely healed, the oral care professional then needs to attach the tooth portion to the metal rod-like structure. This is done by using an extension under the tooth portion to connect it to the post.
Sometimes, patients do not have quite enough bone to hold the implants. At the same time, it isn't narrow or worn enough to warrant plate or subperiosteal dental implants. In this case, the doctor can remove bone from one area of the body and graft it onto the jaw.
Whether you live in New York or Fullerton, dentists have several options to restore your smile to one you can be proud of. Dental implants do require healing time, but in exchange, you regain full use of your teeth. As an added benefit, they last for a significant amount of time.

Effective Teeth Preservation Procedures

Effective Teeth Preservation Procedures

When it comes to tooth preservation there had been breakthroughs that need to be mentioned because of their effectiveness, these substances are fluoride and sealants. Order the dentist is not only useful because they are able to clean spots that are very hard to reach by traditional brushing and flossing, they are also able to provide substances that can help you prevent tooth decay and further complications which are associated by the direct action bacteria, pressure and other factors over the outermost layer of the teeth, the Enamel.
Sealants
These are somewhat acid substances that can be applied to the teeth by your dentist in order to prevent decay, sealants can remain active on the teeth for years at a time however, order to make sure that it has not worn out it is recommended to visit the oral hygienist on a regular basis for possible reapplication which will undoubtedly prolong the health of your teeth.
The teeth where the sealant is to be applied need to be clean and dry then the dentist will be able to "paint" each tooth with the sealant which is often transparent or white. The sealant will stay in place and will effectively prevent teeth from wearing out and the development of caries. While it does sound that sealants are the complete solution, they are just a complement to fluoride.
Fluoride
This is an extremely useful substance which can prevent tooth decay by reaching parts of the teeth which had been weakened by the action of acids and bacteria found in a person's mouth. Because of its effectiveness nearly 100 70 million people in the United States use fluoridated water which is provided by the water authorities.
Just like sealants fluorite can prevent the development of caries and tooth decay by making teeth stronger and partially immune to sugars that can break down the minerals naturally found in teeth. In addition, they are also able to provide a therapeutic output by revitalizing the minerals which have been worn out in teeth.
Applying these two methods of Teeth preservation can be very effective preventive measure which is also covered by many insurance policies.

Instant Dental Implants Or Immediate Load Dental Implants

Immediate Load Dental Implants or Instant Dental Implants

The latest in the field of tooth implants is the instant dental implants procedure. Also, called as immediate load teeth implants or same-day dental implants, this latest method has been pioneered by Sargon Immediate Tooth Replacement System.
Instant dental implants have an advanced design and are so technically advanced that they are the next generation in the field of implants. With same-day tooth implants there are no waiting periods as in the traditional method. You can have your tooth replaced the same day and walk out with your new tooth implant. The new tooth is as good as your original teeth and you can use them as you would use your normal teeth.
Immediate load teeth implants are a major advancement in the field of dental restorative capability. Compared to the traditional teeth implants that take several visits for the implants to be placed and several more for the crown to be placed. This procedure can take anywhere from 2-6 months depending on how fast your implant heals on the other hand the same day dental implants can be done in a day.
With instant dental implants you can walk out of the surgery in less than a hour with your implant and new tooth. No more ugly gaps in your mouth with the implant screw showing up whenever your smile! The procedure is done under local anesthesia.
Another advantage with the instant tooth implants is that surrounding gums and bones are still healthy and fully available when the implants are placed. In delayed implants the surrounding gums and bones may recede and cause an unnatural looking gum line. The discomfort when putting in the same day teeth implants is also quite low.
People who need their front tooth replaced can opt for instant tooth implants. Many people dread going out with screws sticking out of their gums that too right at the front of their mouth. That can be quite distressing for teenagers and young people forming new friendships and relationships. Instant load teeth implants are true blessing for these people.
Instant dental implants also helps avoid the multiple visits that people have to make to the dentist to get their tooth replaced. It saves time, energy and avoids the anxiety and stress that many people experience when visiting their dentists.

Don't Ignore Bad Breath, San Diego

Does this sound familiar to you? My dentist and hygienist mentioned that I had irritated gums as they cleaned my teeth. This is a symptom of gingivitis. Gingivitis can be a stepping stone to major problems in the mouth and gum line. It can lead to periodontal disease, which is a much more serious problem with the potential for actual bone loss.
Halitosis (bad breath) could be related to a gingivitis infection as both are caused by bacteria. Red, swollen and/or bleeding gums characterize gingivitis. These symptoms are most evident upon flossing and sometimes from brushing.
Bacteria cause gingivitis. And bacteria are considered to be responsible for bad breath.
Sometimes, I could even see the bloodstains that the hygienist quietly wiped away with a towel. It was embarrassing enough to know that I wasn't controlling my gingivitis problem, but to know that she was actually trying not to make a big deal out of it was troubling.
I knew my dentist was concerned because she gave me a bottle of alcohol based mouthwash to try and mentioned that she wanted to see how I looked next time. I don't like using it; there is too much alcohol and the taste is not very pleasant. Alcohol may also dry the mucous membranes in the mouth.

Dental Implants Information

Dental implants are ideal to replace broken or damaged teeth. Be advised that these dental implants can be a costly procedure as well as lengthy procedure.
Typically, dental implants have a starting cost around $1000 dollars for each tooth. If you have dentures, bridges, broken or damaged teeth dental implants could be a great investment for your smile. This procedure has very low failure rates. If a failure was to occur, chances are that there was an undetected bacterial infection during the install of the implant.
Timeframes needed to complete the dental implant procedure have a few contributing factors. One such factor is state of the jawbone. If the doctor needs more jawbone to work with, bone grafting may be required. This process must be completed and healed before the dental implant can be installed.
Osseointegration is a process where a titanium post is screwed into the jawbone. This must be left for 3-6 months so that the bone can fuse around it. A plate style implant may be used between the gum and the jawbone if the bone integrity is not ideal.
Once the healing has completed, the doctor will make a cast of the mouth. Then a ceramic tooth will be made to match the existing shape and color of the teeth.
It is always advisable to consult your dentist regarding dental implants. In some cases, they may be able to offer you a finance plan to have the procedure done. Be sure to ask any and all questions about dental implants with your.

Benefits of Implant Tech With No Bone Loss

Without the proper treatment by a dental implant specialist and continued maintenance, the success rates of dental implants are greatly reduced. Complications from dental implants can include inflammation, swelling, tissue loss, bone loss, or even nerve damage to the gums and jaw bone.
Fortunately, there is an implant system, which along with the help of an experienced practitioner, ensures long-term form and aesthetic function. Periodontists have spent the past seven years spreading the word about the implant system, in hopes that the world's dentists and practitioners will adopt the best implant treatment possible.
The design is so unique and successful that all of the world's leading implant manufacturers have cloned this design concept over the last several years. The design preserves bone in the jaw. This is essential when having esthetic tooth replacement in the front of the mouth. If the bone even recedes 2 mm under the gum over time, the overlying gum tissue will recede causing an aesthetic failure.
Since the inception of implantology 35 years ago, dentists have been treating implant patients under the rule that 2 mm of bone resorption within the first year of the procedure is permissible. However, research has shown that over time even 2 mm of bone loss has repercussions, in that the gum tissue loses stability and becomes susceptible to inflammation.
It has virtually no micromovement, is bacteria proofed, prevents bone resorption, and ensures stable and healthy soft tissue in the jaw.
The purpose was to demonstrate whether or not the system meets dentists' and clients' standards of success and is suitable for single tooth replacements, bridge abutments, and retention.
Evaluating nearly 5,500 implants, the study tested for clinical stability, inflammation of hard and soft tissue, bone loss, mucosa loss, and patient satisfaction. The results found a 98.7% success for restoration and 97.9% success for end-implant restoration; a 97.3% success rate where there was a large gap involved; and a 95.8% success rate when involving reduced dentition.
Periodontists' patients can live a life without worrying about their implants. Their patients don't have to worry about infection or long-term bone loss, and it looks so natural that they have little self-consciousness about their implants. They can only hope every dentist adopts this system as the periodontists at their practice have.

About Sleep Apnea

Given the fact that obstructive sleep apnea can have devastating health consequences, various solutions have been looked for in the attempt to improve the condition. Thus, companies specialized in oral appliances have come up with a device that can limit the number of episodes of breathing cessation during sleep. The effectiveness of the therapy using the sleep apnea dental appliance has been remarkable as severe conditions were prevented from developing. Less hypertension and lower risks of stroke and heart disease: these are actually the expected results after using the sleep apnea dental appliance. Though most experts recommend such devices for the treatment of the mild and moderate sleep apnea cases, successes have been reputed in severe conditions as well.

A sleep apnea dental appliance is a special mouthpiece designed by the dentist to match the structure of both teeth and jaws; its main function is that of preventing the collapse of the airways and the creation of an insufficient airflow towards the lungs. The sleep apnea dental appliance pulls the tongue and the jaw forward so that the airway remains open all the time, thus ensuring proper sleep and very few awakenings, if any at all. Before the use of such a device proper medical investigations need to be conducted both with the physician and the dentist.

There are several things you should expect from a sleep apnea dental appliance; first of all depending on its complexity and the materials used, the price can range from $50 to $2,000. The most important feature to be looked for in a sleep apnea dental appliance is the comfort; if you have a device custom-made for you, then you are sure quality materials will be the guarantee of a good night's rest. Though price can influence one's choice, it is good to remember that the cheaper the materials, the less comfortable the sleep apnea appliance.

One more thing you should expect from a good sleep apnea dental appliance is the mobility of the device. The problem with the products that you purchase over the counter is that they only have one size and, therefore they will not fit all. However, if the device is custom-made, then the adjustment of the sleep apnea dental appliance is also possible for the most appropriate jaw and tongue position. Certain appliances even allow for side to side and vertical motion, which is great in terms of comfort and the prevention of any jaw health problems.

Cure Chronic TMJ

Are you experiencing constant headache, ear pain and pressure in your jaw joint and muscles? Do you have grinding sound and discomforts whenever you open and close your mouth? These are some of the annoying symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder also known as TMJ. It is a dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that causes pain and discomforts. Some people have this disorder occasionally but others are experiencing long term symptoms. In this case it is important, to know how to cure chronic TMJ.

Although TMJ symptoms do not indicate serious health problems, it is essential to find a cure to relieve the discomforts. Here are some tips to cure chronic TMJ:

Medications are common cure for chronic TMJ. Of course it is best to ask your health provider which medicine will work best for your condition. In most cases pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed. The downside of drugs is that prolong use of medications may lead to addiction and other side effects like liver damage.

Sleep and Sleep Disorders

Sleep:
You spend 33% of your life sleeping! We just can't stay alive without it. The proper functioning of many of your body's functions, such as memory, immune system, and energy, are directly related to the quality of your sleep. Approximately 90 million people in North America have a sleep disorder. Are you included in this group?

While sleeping normally, the body temperature, blood pressure, breathing pace, and nearly all of your bodily functions slow down. In contrast to this, the brain maintains the same level of activity as when you are awake. A lot of research has shown that our minds are as busy when we sleep as they are when we are awake. During the eight hour sleep pattern, adults usually change from two completely different patterns: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM sleep.

REM Sleep: Nearly all dreams happen while in REM sleep.
Normal adults spend 20 to 25% of their sleep in the REM sleep cycle.

One of the most well known sleep problems is obstructive sleep apnea.

Is snoring dangerous?

Unless you think about the harm done to the relationship with your mate in bed then, of course not, snoring is basically not dangerous in and of itself. An experienced dentist can treat and eliminate it. Snoring, however, is known to indicate the possibility of obstructive sleep apnea, a potentially serious problem that can cause a lot of trouble.
